Jimmy Koplik- Watkins Glen “Summer Jam” in 1973

Jimmy Koplik- Watkins Glen “Summer Jam” in 1973

While not quite the Fyre Festival, Jimmy Koplik had his own mess of a concert in the summer of 1973. He was on “Chaz and AJ” this morning to discuss how the Watkins Glen Summer Jam turned out to be his own personal disaster.

The Summer Jam was to feature the Grateful Dead and the Allman Brothers. Tickets were ten dollars and the venue was to hold 150,000 people.  The Dead were going to open up the show because, as Koplik stated, “they felt that there was a certain magic opening it up and welcoming everybody there and getting everybody moving”.

Sadly, it all went wrong Friday night when the New York State Police shut down the thruway because two hundred thousand people showed up right around the same time. From there, Koplik attests, “the gates came down because we were prepared for 150,000 people and 600,000 ended up showing up”

The show, on Saturday, was basic chaos with far too many people for the venue. Once all the people left there was another problem. “We realized we forgot to put garbage pails out. There were 600,000 people’s worth of garbage all over the field”.

His cleaning company refused to do it for original 5,000 dollars and, after a week of haggling, the New York Department of Health threatened to arrest him if he neglected the mess any longer. The 23 year old Koplik wrote a check out for $50,000 which would be $283,000 in today’s dollars.

After the mess of Summer Jam, Koplik considered going to the 1994 Woodstock but they asked him to stay home. Chaz put it best, “You know it was a good party when they say don’t come back”.

AJ’s Car ( Or in this case, Truck ) of the Day: 1969 International Harvester Scout

AJ’s Car ( Or in this case, Truck ) of the Day: 1969 International Harvester Scout

Car (Or in this case, Truck ): International Harvester Scout

Year: 1969

What makes it special: The International Harvester Scout is an off-road vehicle produced from 1961 to 1980. A precursor of more sophisticated SUV’s to come, it was created as a competitor to the Jeep, and it initially featured a fold-down windshield. The Scout and second-generation Scout II were produced in Fort Wayne, Indiana, as two-door trucks with a removable hard top with options of a full-length roof, half-cab pickup, and/or soft top.

What made it famous: The Scout 800 replaced the Scout 80 in 1965. The new 800 model was built from 1965 to 1968. These models had many improvements in comfort and design, including bucket seats, better instrumentation and heating systems, updated dashboard, optional rear seats, and optional 196 four-cylinder, or 232 inline-six. Beginning in March 1967, a 266 ci V8 engine was also offered. Externally, changes were limited to an anodized aluminum grille with a rectangular “International” logo paced on the grille, the IH badge was moved to the hood, the door handles became the button type, and the tailgate no longer included the “hooks.” The base engine was a naturally aspirated “Comanche” 152 four-cylinder with 93 hp, of which a turbocharged version with 111 hp was also offered. In August 1966, the turbo version was complemented by the bigger 196 which used less fuel with exactly the same power. The 196 motor achieved 20 mpg. The turbo version was dropped in early 1968. The fold-down windshield was still available, code 16536, but few were ordered because this was not advertised and the vacuum wipers were moved to the bottom of the windshield frame with the fixed windshield.

Why I would want one: Again, this falls under the “something different” category. You see so many Jeeps, but how many International Scouts do you see? It’s for those who want something out of the ordinary. ( With no disrespect to Jeep lovers of course )

Fun fact: International Harvester began building trucks and pickups in 1907. In 1953, it added a truck-based people carrier, the Travelall. In the late 1950’s, it began to design a competitor for the two-door Jeep CJ 4×4. The 1961 model year Scout 80 made its debut in late 1960.

AJ’s Car of the Day: 1966 Datsun 1600 Roadster

AJ’s Car of the Day: 1966 Datsun 1600 Roadster

Car: Datsun 1600 Roadster

Year: 1966

What made it special: The Datsun Sports was a series of roadsters produced by Nissan in the 1960’s. The series was a predecessor to the Z-car in the Fairlady line, and offered a competitor to the European MG, Triumph, Fiat and Alfa Romeo sports cars. The line began with the 1959 S211 and continued through 1970 with the SP311 and SR311 lines. The Fairlady saw competitors follow its introduction, with examples called the Honda S500, the Toyota Sports 800, and the Daihatsu Compagno. In Japan, it represented one of three core products offered by Nissan at Japanese Nissan dealerships called Nissan Shop, alongside the Datsun Truck and the Datsun 1000. The Datsun SRL 2000 was the two-seat roadster that made their name.

What made it famous: The new model was first shown at the 1964 Tokyo Motor Show, but did not enter production until March 1965. Marketed as the Datsun Sports 1600 in many export markets including North America, it featured 14 inch wheels and minor exterior changes. The SPL311 was also known in the United States, on the West Coast, as the “Roadster”. The front suspension was independent, utilizing coil springs over hydraulic shocks. Rear suspension was a common leaf springs design, dampened with hydraulic shocks. The 1600 SPL311 came with a pair of SU carburetors. The engine produced 95 hp. The R16 is an in-line four cylinder OHV engine. Early SPL311 came with a high compression engine that had three main bearings, hydraulic lifters, a cast iron block and cast iron head. Top speed for the SPL311 with approximately 91 octane gasoline was approximately 105 mph. The axle gearing suffered from design limitations and Datsun performance parts offered a cooling system as a retrofit. Steering utilized a worm gear design. The hood badge said “Datsun” in individual letters, the rear badge said “Datsun 1600”, and the side badges said “Datsun 1600”  for the export market. It continued in production through April 1970.

Why I would want one: Love the style, love the roadster’s top down, in the wind driving experience.

Fun fact: Actor Paul Newman started his racing career in one. It had a potent 1,982cc overhead cam engine with dual SU type side draft carbs and a five-speed transmission.
