AJ’s “Badass Friday” Car of the Day: 1970 Ford Mustang Boss 302

AJ’s “Badass Friday” Car of the Day: 1970 Ford Mustang Boss 302

Car: Ford Mustang Boss 302 ( Car shown at Dragone Classic Motorcars in Orange )

Year: 1970

What makes it special: Produced for the famed Trans-Am racing series, Ford’s Mustang Boss 302 was a high-performance variant for the 1969 and 1970 model years, along with the more powerful Boss 429 Mustang. The Boss 302 returned as a Mustang variant for the 2012 and 2013 model years as well.

What made it famous: Designed by former General Motors employee Larry Shinoda, the Boss 302 was famous for it’s reflective C-Stripe on its side. It’s Hi-Po engine was created for the SCCA’s Trans-Am Road Racing series, and was a unique small-block V8 that featured thin-wall, nickel block casting. It featured 4-bolt mains, screw-in freeze plugs, and canted valve design heads that were being developed for the famed 351 Cleveland V8, which debuted that following year. For the 1970 model year, the C-Stripes developed into “Hockey Stick” stripes that began along the top of the hood, then running along the sides. The 1970 model replaced the four headlights with two vents in the outside position while keeping two headlights within the grille. It’s dual exhaust system was redone, along with competition suspension and a Hurst Floor shifter as standard equipment.

Why I would want one: Produced in smaller numbers than a standard Mustang makes them fairly rare to find, and the engine alone would make any muscle car fan want the Boss 302.

Fun fact: The “Boss” name came from when designer Larry Shinoda was asked what project he was working on, and he would answer “The Boss’s car” because it was a secret project.

AJ’s Car of the Day: 1966 Chevrolet Chevy II Nova Super-Sport Hardtop

AJ’s Car of the Day: 1966 Chevrolet Chevy II Nova Super-Sport Hardtop

Car: Chevrolet Chevy II Nova Super-Sport Hardtop
Year: 1966
What makes it special: For Chevrolet’s 1966 model year, the Chevy II was given a restyle with sharp edges based on their Super Nova concept. The car now featured a more bold grille and a semi-fastback style roofline, giving the car a more sporty look. It also was given humped fenders much like the larger Chevrolet offerings of that year. It sported vertical taillights and single headlights. The line-up began with the Chevy II 100 and Chevy II Nova 400. For extra money, Chevy II 400 Nova buyers could get a Nova Super-Sport.
What made it famous: In Sport Coupe only, the Super-Sport was the top of the line for the Nova. Although the 194 cu in inline-6 was a Super-Sport standard engine, any Chevy II powerplant could be had in a Super-Sport. Super-Sports, or just “SS” for short, were known for wide rocker panels and a bright aluminum rear deck lid cove trim. There was an SS emblem featured on the grille and ribbed rear panels, and Super-Sport script on its rear quarter panels. The SS got its wheel covers from the 1965 Chevrolet Malibu SS. Strato-bucket seats were included, but the tachometer was an extra cost.
Why I would want one: Of all the Nova’s in all model years, the 1966 and 1967 are my absolute favorite.
Fun fact: Chevrolet’s 1966 sales brochure promoted the Super-Sport as the “Chevrolet Chevy II Nova Super-Sport, but the “Nova” name did not appear anywhere on the car’s body.

AJ’s Car of the Day: 1966 Dodge Polara Hardtop

AJ’s Car of the Day: 1966 Dodge Polara Hardtop

Car: Dodge Polara Hardtop

Year: 1966

What makes it special: Beginning with the 1960 model year, the Polara was Dodge’s top of the line full-sized car, and after the 1962 Dodge Custom 880, it became an intermediate model. The Polara name was in use until the 1973 model year when it was replaced by the Monaco.

What made it famous: The Polara became a C-Platform Chrysler model being shared with Plymouth beginning in 1965. They were known for their squarish design from 1965 through 1968, and criticized for low fuel economy, with some configurations only delivering 12 miles per gallon. V8 offerings ranged from the 318 to 383. The interior and exterior were given a slight restyle, the automatic transmission was given a reverse lockout button, a telescopic tilt wheel was added as well as thin shell bucket seats, four-passenger seat bels with optional front shoulder belts.

Why I would want one: I think it’s a good-looking cruiser, and lends itself well to customizing or performance mods.

Fun fact: The Polara’s name was a reference to the Polaris star, and a marketing attempt keeping in line with the excitement of the time period surrounding the early 1960’s Space Race.
