AJ’s Car of the Day: 1965 MGB Roadster

AJ’s Car of the Day: 1965 MGB Roadster

Car: MGB Roadster

Year: 1965

What makes it special: The MGB was produced by the British Motor Corporation, then the Austin-Morris division of British Leyland. Variants included the MGB GT Three-Door 2+2 Coupe, the six-cylinder Roadster and Coupe’ MGC, and the eight-cylinder 2+j coupe’, the MGB GT V8. It replaced the MGA model in 1963, and was continued until the 1980 model year.

What made it famous: The MGB was one of the first cars to feature controlled crumple zones that were designed to protect the driver and passenger in a 30 mph impact. The MGB grabbed a 0-60mph time of just over 11 seconds, and had a 95hp three-bearing, 1,798 CC B-Series at first, before recieveing an upgrade to a five-bearing crankshaft in 1964. The majority of MGB’s were an export to the U.S.

Why I would want one: To me, the MGB is the epitome of British Sports Cars. My late cousin was a restorer of them, and whenever I see one, I think of him.

Fun fact: After a twelve year hiatus, the MGB re-entered production as the heavily modified MG RV8 with a 2,000 car limited-run before being replaced by the MG F in 1995.

AJ’s Car (Or in this case, truck ) of the Day: 1957 Ford F100 Pick-Up

AJ’s Car (Or in this case, truck ) of the Day: 1957 Ford F100 Pick-Up

Car (Or in this case, truck ): Ford F100 Pick-Up

Year: 1957

What makes it special: Ford’s third generation of the F-Series for the 1956 through 1960 model years. The front bodywork was widened in order to integrate both the cab and front fenders together. They also integrated the hood into the bodywork in a clamshell design. The optional chrome grille was now even more prominent than previous years. Two sets of rear beds were available, with a flareside or styleside.

What made it famous: In May of ’57,Ford stopped building trucks at their Highland Park Plant. All light and medium trucks were transferred to ten other plants in the U.S. Overhead-Valve inline-6’s and V8’s like the 171hp, 272 V8 were the same engines used in passenger cars for that time period. A floor-shifted 4-speed manual was available.

Why I would want one: Love the integrated fender/cab look, love the large chrome grill. Very stylish.

Fun fact: This was also the last generation for the Ford Panel Van, which would not return again until the E-Series introduction in 1968.

AJ’s “Badass Friday” Car of the Day: 1971 Plymouth ‘Cuda Coupe

AJ’s “Badass Friday” Car of the Day: 1971 Plymouth ‘Cuda Coupe

Car: Plymouth ‘Cuda Coupe

Year: 1971

What makes it special: The Plymouth Barracuda model finally shook off its “economy car” stigma beginning with the 1970 model year. It’s original fastback design was replaced by coupe and convertible body styles. It’s E-Body was also shared with Dodge’s Challenger model, although no sheet metal was shared between the two. Three versions were available for 1970 & 1971, consisting of the base model, the luxury Gran Coupe and the ‘Cuda sport model.

What made it famous: Standard for the ‘Cuda was the 335hp, 383 cu in V8, but it also had options like the 440 cu in Super Commando and the 440 cu in, six-barrel Super Commando Six Pak, and the famed 425hp, 426 Hemi V8. The 440 and Hemi equipped ‘Cuda’s were given upgraded suspension and structural reinforcing to help transfer all that power to the road. The engine bay was now larger than the previous year A-Body, to accommodate the larger powerplants like the 440 and 426 V8’s The 1971 Plymouth ‘Cuda was given one-year only dual headlights and as well and fender fins.

Why I would want one: The ‘Cuda and its sister Challenger model were the Pony Car offerings for Plymouth and Dodge, and given the amount of V8 power available for each, these were pretty potent Ponies.

Fun fact: The high-performance models were marketed as ‘Cuda deriving from the 1969 option.
