AJ’s Car of the Day: 1970 Ford Mustang Convertible

AJ’s Car of the Day: 1970 Ford Mustang Convertible

Car: Ford Mustang Convertible

Year: 1970

What makes it special: The 1969 model year saw the Ford Mustang getting a beefier body, it was now longer, wider and heavier. The 1970 Mustang was restyled to be less aggressive-looking, and now had headlights moved inside the grille, with fins adorning each side of the grille. The rear fender air scoops were removed for ’70, and the taillight panel was now flat, rather than the prior year’s concave panel.

What made it famous: For the 1970 model year, the 351W V8 engine options was replaced with a new 351 cu in Cleveland, or 351C V8 in either a 2V or 4V version. The 351C 4V M-Code engine sported 11.0:1 compression and put out 300bhp @5400 rpm. The new performance engine used elements from the Ford 385 series engine and the Boss 302.

Why I would want one: Although admittedly, I do like the 1969 model year’s front grille better, I’d still own a 1970 in a heartbeat.

Fun fact: Ford made special variants of the Mustang in late 1969: 96 “Mustang Twister Specials” in Grabber Orange that were Mach 1’s with special Twister decals for their Kansas dealers, and “Sidewinders” which were built in Dearborn, Michigan, shipped to Omaha, and sold in Iowa and Nebraska.

AJ’s Car of the Day: 1973 Mazda RX2 Coupe

AJ’s Car of the Day: 1973 Mazda RX2 Coupe

Car: Mazda RX2 Coupe
Year: 1973
What makes it special: Japanese automaker Mazda produced Rotary engine cars before the RX7. One of the first such equipped cars was the RX2, which was produced for the 1970 through 1978 model years, in both a coupe and sedan body style. It was offered as the 616 coupe and the 618 sedan.
What made it famous: The Mazda RX2 was powered by a Wankel Rotary engine, which is an internal combustion engine using an eccentric rotary design to convert pressure into a rotating motion. The first models had rectangular headlights, but the rotary powered cars received round twin headlights starting with the 1971 model year. The car was sold in an export market categaory as the Mazda 616, and briefly as a 618.
Why I would want one: It’s really a small, technological marvel, and I like the overall look of the Coupe.
Fun fact: The Wankel engine has the advantage of simplicity, smoothness, compactness, high revolutions per minute and a high power to weight ratio.

AJ’s Car ( Or Truck ) of the Day: 1939 Chevrolet Suburban

AJ’s Car ( Or Truck ) of the Day: 1939 Chevrolet Suburban

Car: ( Or, in this case, Truck ): Chevrolet Suburban

Year: 1939

What makes it special: Rarely does any nameplate survive as long as Chevrolet’s Suburban. It started as a 2-door, eight passenger vehicle with 60hp in the 1930’s to the 355hp SUV’s we know today. It has evolved through more than 10 generations.

What made it famous: The second generation of the Chevrolet Suburban was produced for the 1937 to 1940 model years. By this point, its Stovebolt Inline six-cylinder engine boasted 79hp, and it’s body style changes gave Surburban a look that lasted till the 1956 model year.

Why I would want one: I love old trucks, and even though they are referred to as “SUV’s” now, to me…it still has the heartbeat of a truck.

Fun fact: The Chevrolet Suburban is still produced as sold today.
