AJ’s Car of the Day: 1958 Chevrolet Impala 2-Dr. Hardtop

AJ’s Car of the Day: 1958 Chevrolet Impala 2-Dr. Hardtop

Car: Chevrolet Impala 2-Dr. Hardtop
Year: 1958
What makes it special: Impala was produced and introduced for the 1958 model year and was the top-of-the-line for the Bel Air hardtops and convertible body styles. The hardtop models had a shorter rear window and longer rear. The 1958 style was a one-year-only style, and no other series included a convertible for ’58.

What made it famous: The 1958 Impala sat on an “X-Frame”, which made it now longer, wider and lower that the tri-five Chevrolets. It was the first to feature dual headlights, and the tall, sharp rear fins of the 1957 were replaced by sculpted rear fenders. If you had an Impala, you had three taillights per each side, while lower models were given just two, and the wagons got only one per side. Impalas were known for their crossed-flag badge insignias, bright rocker panels and cosmetic-only rear fender scoops. Powerplants ranged from a 185 to 290hp 283 V8, a 250hp, 280hp, or 315hp 348 “W-Block” Turbo-Thrust V8, and you could still have a Ramjet Fuel Injection set-up on the Turbo-Fire 283 V8.
Why I would want one: It’s a one-year only body style that is not only good looking, but rarer than most Chevrolet offerings.
Fun fact: Fans of the 1973 George Lucas film “American Graffiti” may remember actor Ron Howard driving around in a white 1958 Chevrolet Impala 2-Dr. Hardtop.

AJ’s Car of the Day: 1950 Cadillac Series 62 Coupe

AJ’s Car of the Day: 1950 Cadillac Series 62 Coupe

Car: Cadillac Series 62 Coupe

Year: 1950

What makes it special: The Sixty-Two Series of Cadillac was produced for the 1940 through 1964 model years, and was created to replace the Series 65 entry level model. It is also known as the Series 62, and became the Series 6200 in the 1959 model year until getting renamed the Cadillac Calais in 1965.

What made it famous: Major restyling happened to the Series 62 for the 1950 model year, as it became lower, sleeker, and was given a longer hood and a one-piece windshield. It was powered by a 190bhp, 1-barrel 331 cu in engine mated to either a 3-speed manual or Hydramatic transmission.

Why I would want one: It’s a long running series of Cadillac. Love the long hood, low profile of the car.

Fun fact: The Series 62 became the Calais model in the 1965 model year.

AJ’s Car of the Day: 1947 Buick Roadmaster Convertible

AJ’s Car of the Day: 1947 Buick Roadmaster Convertible

Car: Buick Roadmaster Convertible
Year: 1947
What makes it special: The Roadmaster model was Buick’s flagship model from 1936 to 1958. They shared a basic platform with Cadillac. They returned again for the 1991 to 1996 model years. After World War II ended and production began again, more chrome, swept-back fenders and a war-inspired “Bombsight” hood ornament was added
What made it famous: For the 1947 model year, Roadmasters received a new stamped grille and a separate upper bar was included. The Roadmaster name now was in red-filled script front and rear. Powering the 1947 Roadmaster was a 144hp, 2-barrel 320 cu in eight cylinder engine, mated to a 2-speed Dynaflow automatic transmission.
Why I would want one: It just screams class, style and opulence. You don’t see these every day.
Fun fact: Movie fans will recognize the Roadmaster name from the 1949 Buick Roadmaster convertible used in the 1988 movie “Rain Man” starring Tom Cruise and Dustin Hoffman.
