AJ’s Car of the Day: 1968 Cadillac Eldorado Coupe

AJ’s Car of the Day: 1968 Cadillac Eldorado Coupe

Car: Cadillac Eldorado
Year: 1968
What makes it special: Cadillac’s Eldorado was a personal luxury car produced for the 1952 to 2002 model years, spanning just over ten generations. It was at or near the top of the Cadillac model line during the early model years.
What made it famous: The sixth generation Eldorado was completely redesigned for the 1967 model year and promoted as a personal Cadillac. It now shared its E-Body platform with Buick’s Rivietra and Oldsmobile’s Tornado. It now had front wheel drive in a unified powerplant package adapted to a standard Cadillac 429 V8 mated to a Turbo-Hydramatic 425 automatic transmission. Disc brakeswere an option, and it  now had standard safety equipment like an energy absorbing steering column and padded dashboard.
Why I would want one: It was probably the sportiest, most stylish Cadillac ever made. Also the beginning of Front wheel drive for Cadillac models.
Fun fact: GM’s Unified Powerplant Package was later shared with the GMC Motorhome beginning in 1972.

AJ’s “Badass Friday” Car of the Day: 1973 Plymouth 340 Duster Hardtop Coupe

AJ’s “Badass Friday” Car of the Day: 1973 Plymouth 340 Duster Hardtop Coupe

Car: Plymouth 340 Duster Hardtop Coupe
Year: 1973
What makes it special:  The original Duster was a semi-fastback two-door coupe version of the Valiant model that was marketed by Plymouth from the 1970 to 1976 model years. Duster was also positioned to compete with Ford’s slightly smaller semi-fastback Maverick compact car and the AMC Hornet that were both also introduced in 1970, and the slightly larger semi-fastback Chevrolet Nova whose design was introduced in 1968. Several trim and option package variants of the Duster were offered with names that included Feather Duster, Gold Duster, Silver Duster, Space Duster, Duster Twister, Duster 340 and Duster 360. These marketing variations of the basic Duster design targeted customers seeking economy, cargo capacity, and/or performance.

What made it famous: Following the design changes on the Valiant models, the Duster also received a new hood, grille, front fenders, bumpers, and taillights for 1973. The taillights on previous years mounted from the inside and had a flush appearance. Taillights were mounted from the outside and were trimmed in chrome, remaining unchanged through 1976. Simpler single-piston slider-type disc brake calipers were introduced for 1973, standard on 318-powered cars and with power-assist on 340 models, replacing the Kelsey Hayes four-piston calipers. Disc brake-equipped Dusters now had the more-common 5-lugs on 4.5″ wheel bolt pattern. All 340 and some 318 engine-equipped cars received the simplified 8.25″ rear axle assembly with wheel bearings riding directly on the axle shaft and endplay being taken by C-clips. These axles also featured the 5-on-4.5″ wheel bolt pattern, replacing the 8.75″ “drop-out” arrangement seen on some 1966-1972 A-bodies. A 3-speed Torque Flight automatic along with a manual transmission was offered with the 225 slant six. Electronic ignition became standard across the board.

Why I would want one: I’ve always loved the Plymouth Duster. Any model that gets a V8 when originally designed for economy always means instant factory hot rod.

Fun fact: The Plymouth Duster’s logo was, and still remains, one of the most recognizable automobile logos.

AJ’s Car of the Day: 1965 Sunbeam Tiger Mark I

AJ’s Car of the Day: 1965 Sunbeam Tiger Mark I

Car: Sunbeam Tiger Mark I
Year: 1966
What makes it special: The Sunbeam Tiger was the high-performance V8 version of the British Rootes Group’s Sunbeam Alpine roadster, designed in part by car designer and racing driver Carroll Shelby and produced from 1964 until 1967. Shelby had carried out a similar V8 conversion on the AC Cobra, and hoped to be offered the contract to produce the Tiger at his facility in America. Rootes decided instead to contract the assembly work to Jensen at West Bromwich in England, and pay Shelby a royalty on every car produced.
What made it famous: Two major versions of the Tiger were built: the Mark I from 1964–67 was fitted with the 260 cu in Ford V8; the Mark II, of which only 633 were built in the final year of Tiger production, was fitted with the larger Ford 289 cu in engine. Two prototype and extensively modified versions of the Mark I competed in the 1964 24 Hours of Le Mans, but neither completed the race. Rootes also entered the Tiger in European rallies with some success. Production ended in 1967 soon after the Rootes Group was taken over by Chrysler, which did not have a suitable engine to replace the Ford V8.
Why I would want one: This is one of the wildest sports cars ever built, second only to the Shelby Cobra.
Fun fact: For two years it was the American Hot Rod Association’s national record holder over a quarter-mile drag strip.
