Throwback Concert: The Doors of the 21st Century at Toyota Oakdale Theatre 2003

Throwback Concert: The Doors of the 21st Century at Toyota Oakdale Theatre 2003

By Drew Carrano

The last time The Doors played Connecticut, lead singer Jim Morrison was arrested on stage. That famous incident happened in December 1967 in the old New Haven Arena. Morrison would later make reference to that night in the song “Peace Frog” with the lyric “Blood in the streets in the town of New Haven.”

Fast forward to 2003. Though Morrison is longer with us, two of the original members of The Doors – organist Ray Manzarek and guitarist Robby Krieger – went on tour together and returned Connecticut. They went as “The Doors of the 21st Century,” a name they would later be forced to change. Today we look back at their 2003 show at Toyota Oakdale Theatre.

Today’s Throwback Concert:

An Evening with The Doors of the 21st Century

Monday April 28, 2003

Toyota Oakdale Theatre – Wallingford

About The Tour:

In 2002 Manzarek and Krieger reunited to form a new version of The Doors called “The Doors of the 21st Century” featuring lead singer Ian Astbury of The Cult. Not in the band was original drummer John Densmore. Instead it was Stewart Copeland of The Police on drums and later Ty Dennis.

The very first concert was at The House of Blues in Los Angeles on September 3, 2002. Two months later Copeland injured his left arm while bicycling and was replaced with Dennis. Meanwhile Densmore filed a lawsuit against The Doors of the 21st Century for using the name and logo of The Doors. After losing the lawsuit in 2005, the band changed its name to “Riders On The Storm,” after the 1971 Doors song.

On April 28, 2003, The Doors of the 21st Century came to Toyota Oakdale Theatre and played before a full house on a Monday night. Bringing out the band was 99.1 PLR’s Mike Lapitino, who introduced them like it was 1970 by saying, “Ladies and Gentlemen, from Los Angeles, California…The Doors!” Immediately the band went into Roadhouse Blues, much to the delight of the Oakdale crowd. What followed was a Doors set that was full of hits and classics. A memorable night, no doubt.

Throwback Concert: Black Sabbath at Mohegan Sun Arena 2016

Throwback Concert: Black Sabbath at Mohegan Sun Arena 2016

By Drew Carrano

Black Sabbath’s Tony Iommi said last week in an interview that he’d like to play more shows with the iconic heavy metal band. Black Sabbath hasn’t performed together since February 2017….and as we all know, when a band goes on a ‘farewell’ tour, that doesn’t necessarily mean its really ‘the end.’ Looking at you, Motley Crue.

Today we look back at Black Sabbath’s farewell tour and their last show in Connecticut.

Today’s Throwback Concert:

Black Sabbath

The End Tour

Special Guests: Rival Sons

Saturday August 27, 2016

Mohegan Sun Arena – Uncasville

About The Tour:

There were rumors going around in the summer of 2015 that Black Sabbath was going to give us one last tour. That official announcement came in the fall that Black Sabbath would go on its farewell tour, but this time without original drummer Bill Ward. Founding members Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi and Geezer Butler embarked on a world tour that kicked off in Omaha, Nebraska on January 20, 2016.

“The End Tour” would last a full year and would play over 80 shows across the globe. The tour would wrap up in Black Sabbath’s home city of Birmingham, England.

Black Sabbath’s final New England performance was at Mohegan Sun on August 27, 2016. The capacity crowd at Mohegan Sun Arena rocked out to a set that featured Black Sabbath classics. From the eerie opening song “Black Sabbath” to the air raid sirens of “War Pigs” to the encore “Paranoid,” there’s no doubt that Black Sabbath went out with a bang here in Connecticut.

New Haven Mayor Justin Elicker was on with Chaz and AJ to talk about his apparent side gig as a plumber. It all started with a funny typo while the mayor was on News 8, and he addresses whether or not he feels comfortable with the May 20th reopening date. (6:31)

Kristin Okesson is the general manager for Connoisseur Media CT, and was on to applaud AJ for his valiant effort during “Miles for Masks.” Plus, her son has been named as one of six US pro halfpipe team members! (22:28)

Throwback Concert: RUSH at Mohegan Sun Arena 2013

2013 was a big year for Rush. A big tour that both fans and critics praised and the long awaited induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Today we look back at their 2013 show at Mohegan Sun.

Clockwork Angels Tour

Thursday May 9, 2013

About The Tour:

In 2012 Rush announced its “Clockwork Angels Tour” in support of its twentieth- and final – studio album, “Clockwork Angels.” The year-long tour kicked off on September 7, 2012 in Manchester, New Hampshire and would go on to play 73 cities world wide before ending the tour in Kansas City in August 2013. Rush would visit Connecticut twice on the tour: Bridgeport’s Webster Bank Arena in October 2012 and then Mohegan Sun Arena in May 2013. Both sold out shows.

This highly acclaimed tour featured a nine-piece string ensemble that accompanied Rush during the band’s second set, which highlighted songs off “Clockwork Angels.”

The show at Mohegan Sun Arena was just three weeks after Rush was (finally) inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Fans of the Canadian trio celebrated as their rock heroes gave them a three hour performance consisting of new and classic Rush songs.
