Throwback Concert: Black Sabbath at New Haven Arena 1972

Throwback Concert: Black Sabbath at New Haven Arena 1972

Before there was the New Haven Coliseum there was the New Haven Arena. Located on Grove Street, the old Arena was first opened in 1914. Two things the Arena was probably best known for: hockey and concerts. While hockey fans cheered on the New Haven Blades and its “Slapshot” style of hockey, music fans were rockin’ out to bands like The Rolling Stones, Elton John, Cream, The Allman Brothers Band, Alice Cooper and of course The Doors.

The New Haven Arena closed its doors in 1972 to make way for the newer, larger Coliseum. The Arena was sadly demolished two years later in 1974.

Today we look back one of our favorite shows to come to the Arena: Black Sabbath in 1972. This was first time Black Sabbath played here in Connecticut.

Throwback Concert: Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers at New Haven Coliseum 1995

For nearly 40 years Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers have been rockin’ Connecticut. From their first show here (at Shelton’s Pinecrest in 1980) to their final show (at The XFINITY Theatre in 2017) Tom and his band has entertained tens of thousands of fans across our state. Sadly we’ll never see another Tom Petty live concert again, but we are forever thankful to him and The Heartbreakers for all the great shows they’ve given us over the years.

Today we go back 25 years ago when Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers came to New Haven Coliseum on their “Dogs with Wings” 1995 Tour.

Throwback Concert: The Black Crowes at New Haven Coliseum 1995

Throwback Concert: The Black Crowes at New Haven Coliseum 1995

Let’s face it, 2020 has been terrible. The Black Crowes were scheduled to bring its much anticipated “Shake Your Money Maker” tour to Connecticut this year, but due to Covid-19 the tour has been postponed to 2021. It’s just one of many shows we missed out on this year, but thankfully we’ll have an opportunity to (hopefully) see them next summer.

Today we go back 25 years ago when The Black Crowes came to New Haven Coliseum on its “Amorica or Bust” 1995 Tour.
