Throwback Concert: The Cars at New Haven Coliseum 1980

99.1 PLR celebrates 50 years! This week we are celebrating our ninth year on the air: 1980.

WPLR’s studio at the time was on Chapel Street, which was a short drive to New Haven Coliseum. WPLR and The Coliseum had a long history of presenting some of the biggest rock acts to New Haven. In 1980 WPLR presented The Cars at New Haven Coliseum. The Cars came to the Coliseum to support their new studio album “Panorama.”

Today we look back at that show…

Blizzard introduced us to the incredible Randy Rhoads, who co-wrote with Ozzy, and songs that have become classic metal hits! We proudly welcome Ozzy Osbourne’s debut album Blizzard of Ozz to the 99.1 PLR 50 Years/50 Albums Hall of Fame. Thank you for your votes!

50 Years, 50 Albums 1971: Rolling Stones ‘Sticky Fingers’

50 Years, 50 Albums 1971: Rolling Stones ‘Sticky Fingers’

Welcome to Week 1 of our yearlong 50th Anniversary Celebration. This week, we celebrate the year we went on the air, 1971.

Sticky Fingers was the first album on “Rolling Stones Records” which first featured the Lips and Tongue logo. It also gave the band complete control over the music and artwork. Sticky Fingers album cover was designed by Andy Warhol, with a real working zipper which when unzipped revealed a pair of tighty whities. Everyone thought it was Mick Jagger’s crotch. While Mick was around for that photo shoot, according to Andy it was one of his models and not Mick. They removed the zipper when it started to damage other albums during shipping. A classic from the Stones that sounds as good today as when it came out.
