Throwback Concert: Living Colour at Toad’s Place 2004

99.1 PLR celebrates 50 years! This week we are celebrating another great year in our history: 2004!

By 2004 there weren’t many options for concerts in New Haven. The Coliseum closed two years earlier and the old Palace Theater on College Street was boarded up. Sure clubs like Café Nine, Rudy’s and BAR were bringing in their own acts, but it was Toad’s Place that was brining in the big names. 2004 saw artists like Buddy Guy, Hootie & The Blowfish, They Might Be Giants, Little Feat, Patti Smith and Big Head Todd and the Monsters grace the legendary stage at Toad’s.

That year Living Colour, a WPLR favorite since the late 80s, rocked Toad’s Place. Today we look back at that show…

NFL Agent Joe Linta was very impressed with Tom Brady’s win over the Saints, and is looking forward to a Super Bowl featuring an older quarterback and a younger quarterback. It doesn’t matter who wins each game, the age of quarterbacks in the Super Bowl will be a big talking point. (24:27)

Chaz and AJ received an email about the Abraham Lincoln inauguration, because a person pictured in the background. The discussion wound up being about the invention of the camera, and light bulbs. (31:52)

99.1 PLR celebrates 50 years! This week we are celebrating another great year in our history: 2004.

WPLR and The Grateful Dead have had a long history together. From the shows at New Haven Coliseum and Yale Bowl right up until Jerry Garcia’s death in 1995, we have been grooving with our fellow Deadheads all along. So when the surviving members of the Grateful Dead decided to continue on after Jerry left us, we had to be there!

Today we go back to 2004 when The Dead came to The XFINITY Theatre (then know as the Meadows Music Theatre) on their “Wave That Flag Summer Tour.”

Fun Fact Friday, AJ had info on ‘yo momma’ jokes, some cool facts from “Pulp Fiction,” the movie career of Liam Neeson, and a discussion about sneezes and farts. (26:18)

Boss Keith’s Top 5 was an insane breakdown of the things he’s learned this week that make him angry. (35:50)

The show close right before a three-day break is usually fun, but today’s was particularly unhinged. AJ and Phil traded barbs until one was threatened to be choked out. (47:54)

Throwback Concert: Santana at Pinecrest 1980

99.1 PLR celebrates 50 years! This week we are celebrating our ninth year on the air: 1980.

Remember the old Pinecrest in Shelton? Sadly the venue no longer exists, but before its closing, many of classic rock’s greatest bands played there. Acts like The Allman Brothers Band, Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers, Journey, Chicago, Meatloaf, Bob Marley and more all performed on the Pinecrest stage.

Today we go back to 1980 when Santana played one of the last major concerts at Pinecrest. Santana was coming off his European summer tour, which included three nights at Wembley Arena. The Pinecrest show was just the fourth stop on the United States leg of the tour. It’s hard to fathom a performer like Carlos Santana would even perform in a small town like Shelton considering in 1980 he was stopping in major cities and venues in Chicago, Philadelphia, Denver, St. Louis and Los Angeles!
