50 Years, 50 Albums 1994: Soundgarden ‘Superunknown’

This is the 4th album from Soundgarden and definitely their breakthrough record. Superunknown was recorded shortly after the 1992 Lollapalooza tour and supporting the previous album Badmotorfinger, which gave us songs like “Outshined” and “Rusty Cage.” Superunknown was released in March of 1994 with the first single released in February of that year. “Spoonman” launched this band into the mainstream popularity of rock, no longer considered an Alternative or a Grunge band. Four more singles from this album made Superunknown the best selling album for Soundgarden, 9 times platinum and certainly emphasizing the talent of the late Chris Cornell.

Throwback Concert: The Smithereens at The Sting 1994

99.1 PLR celebrates 50 years! This week we are celebrating another great year in our history: 1994.

One of the clubs we miss here in Connecticut is the old Sting in New Britain. Many great artists have played there, including Eddie Money, John Entwistle, B.B. King, Todd Rundgren, Motorhead, Buddy Guy, Peter Frampton and more. Sadly, The Sting no longer exists, but the memories of the shows there will live on forever.

Today we look back at another artist that played at the Sting: The Smithereens in 1994, fronted by our friend, the late Pat DiNizio. We miss you Pat!
