Throwback Concert: The Allman Brothers Band at New Haven Coliseum 1973

99.1 PLR celebrates 50 years! This week we are celebrating another great year in our history: 1973!

That year PLR welcomed The Allman Brothers Band at New Haven Coliseum. The Allman Brothers had released its third studio album “Eat a Peach” in 1972 and it featured such songs as Ain’t Wastin’ Time No More, Melissa and One Way Out. The band was coming off the tragic death of group leader and founder Duane Allman, who was killed in a motorcycle accident in October 1971. The Allman Brothers did not replace Duane and toured as five-piece band when they returned to the road in 1972 and 1973.

Unfortunately, tragedy struck again in November 1972 when another founding member, Berry Oakley, was also killed in a motorcycle accident.

While talking about nicknames, Chaz and AJ took a few calls from the Tribe about their nicknames, and one guy admitted his came from losing his virginity, on the Queen’s lawn under a picnic table. (0:00)

Carol the accountant was on to make sense of the announcement from the IRS, that you can write-off any PPE purchases this year, like masks, hand sanitizer and disinfectant wipes. However, because it’s the IRS, of course everything is far more complicated than it seems. (6:21)

Dumb Ass News – A Florida woman was arrested and then found to have been hiding tiny vodka bottles in her bra. Ashley admitted that she has routinely carried items in her bra, everything from her cell phone, to money, to.. butter? (20:55)

Naugatuck Mayor Pete Hess was on to talk about the trend of shrimp thefts continuing, with a third heist occurring recently. (29:34)

Kevin the survivalist called in to help answer some questions about when it is OK to eat roadkill, and Ashley admitted that she would never do it. (40:02)

Dumb Ass News – How do you impale yourself on a ladder? Better than that, how does the ladder become stuck in your head? Chaz and AJ were trying to figure out the physics of how this poor guy managed to do it. (44:45)

That year PLR welcomed Santana to Hartford’s Dillon Stadium. Santana hit the road in 1972-73 for its massive “Caravanserai Tour,” which made stops in North and South America, Europe, Asia and Australia. The band was supporting its fourth studio album, “Caravanserai.”

Diana was very excited to share her fact about coffee beans for Fun Fact Friday, but an early flubble derailed her, and distracted Chaz, Ashley and Phil. (23:16)

Comedian Kerryn Feehan is fully vaccinated, and coming to perform in CT this weekend. She was on the phone to share some doubts about the guy she’s been dating, and then tried to help Ashley with her weight loss struggles. (27:00)

Boss Keith’s Top 5 was about the things from his childhood he no longer gets excited for, and AJ called in for the segment, but wound up getting teased for not helping enough during his medical crisis. (37:55)

50 Years, 50 Albums 1985: Dire Straits ‘Brothers in Arms’

Dire Straits, formed in London by brothers Mark and David Knopfler in 1977, hit the ground running with the debut self-titled album in 1978. The band sold over 100 million albums by 1985, making Dire Straits one of the world’s best-selling artists. Brothers in Arms was the fifth album and the last one for the band as they had their first break up returning in 1991 with their final album On Every Street and finally dissolved the band in 1995, not nearly the success of Brothers in Arms. Having Sting sing the chorus of “I Want My MTV” on “Money for Nothing” certainly gained heavy rotation on MTV plus 4 other hits from the album made it their best-selling album and earned a spot on Rolling Stone magazines 500 Greatest Albums of all Time (ranked 351). Now we would like to welcome Dire Straits Brothers in Arms into the WPLR Hall of Fame.
