99.1 PLR celebrates 50 years! This week we are celebrating our first year on the air: 1971.
That year Mountain, along with Johnny Winter, played two shows on the same night at Quinnipiac University in Hamden. The first show was at 8pm and the second show at 11pm. Mountain had just released its monster hit “Mississippi Queen” the year before and were hitting the road to support their second studio album, “Nantucket Sleighride.”

Matt Scott from Fox 61 was on to address his comments from yesterday, mocking AJ’s weight after he was interviewed in his dino costume for Seth’s Make-A-Wish. (0:00)
Dumb Ass News – A monk loses his head, for good luck. (5:27)
Keith recently found a ton of old money in a house, hidden in an attic, in a lockbox. He was on with Chaz and AJ to explain how he specializes in locating hidden treasures in homes. (10:35)
Comedian Sam Morril called in after a very late night on stage at the Stress Factory. He admitted the crowd was too drunk, and this weekend might be his last-ever trip to Bridgeport. (23:17)
During Fun Fact Friday, a Tribe member called in a fact about the highways in the United States. (30:26)
Rose from Avon was on to warn people about bear season. She had her garage ripped apart by bears recently, even though the door was closed, and the garbage was supposed to be protected from them. (34:48)
Boss Keith’s Top 5 was half about Matt Scott’s comments towards AJ’s weight, and half about his list predicting the future. He had thoughts on the Oscars, the NFL Draft, and how much weight he’ll be gaining this summer. (47:34)

Thanks to you, after raising over $10,000 for 4-year-old Seth’s wish, AJ walked around Branford dressed as Seth’s favorite character: Godzilla! Big thanks to Make-A-Wish CT, Premier Subaru, Briggs Tire Company, The Town of Branford, Branford Police, Branford Fire Department and, of course, YOU for helping us make Seth’s wish come true!
From intern to Program Director and everything in-between Eddie oversaw the changing of morning shows, a very uncomfortable firing and then his own firing over a Chaz and AJ situation. Eddie grew up on PLR and it was great catching up with him.
Formed in Glendale, California in 1994 this “Armenian-American” heavy metal band System of a Down achieved huge commercial success with the release of five albums between 1998 and 2005. Toxicity is the second studio album released in 2001, selling 220,000 copies in its first week and a total of 12 million worldwide and certified triple-platinum in 2002. This sophomore effort from the band showed some different musical genres from progressive rock, jazz, Armenian and Greek music to even folk influences while maintaining a sharp metal edge. Although the band is not really synonymous with WPLR, it was one, if not the top selling album of 2001 and based on your votes we would like to welcome System of a Down’s Toxicity into the WPLR Hall of Fame.
99.1 PLR celebrates 50 years! This week we are celebrating another great year in our history: 2001!
That year PLR welcomed U2 to The XL Center (formerly known as the Hartford Civic Center). U2 hit the road in 2001 for the “Elevation Tour” to support their tenth studio album “All That You Can’t Leave Behind,” which featured such hits as Beautiful Day, Stuck in a Moment You Can’t Get Out Of and Elevation. Joining U2 in Hartford was special guest PJ Harvey.
The “Elevation Tour ” was the highest grossing tour of 2001 after playing 113 cities in both Europe and North America. The tour began with a pair of shows in Sunrise, Florida in late March and wrapped up in Miami in early December. The show in Hartford was part of the band’s first leg of the North American Tour. Two nights later, U2 would begin a string of shows at Boston’s TD Garden, where they filmed the concert DVD “Elevation 2001: Live From Boston.”
The Elevation Tour would be so successful, U2 would go on to perform the halftime show at Super Bowl XXXVI in New Orleans.
Interesting note about the Hartford show: After singing Mysterious Ways, Bono makes reference to Toad’s Place and how New Haven was one of U2’s first stops on their very first tour of North American in 1980. The sold out crowd at the XL Center went crazy after he mentions “Toad’s Place.”

Dumb Ass News – Kids as young as 6 months are part of the latest vaccine trials. Chaz and AJ had audio of one of the parents explaining why they agreed to this. (8:30)

AJ was already suited up as Godzilla, to walk around Branford for part of Seth’s Make-A-Wish, and Bob from Premiere Subaru was on the phone to explain why he wanted to get involved. He offered his lot as a starting point, and helped meet the donation goal last week, after hearing about Seth’s story. (30:32)
As AJ’s trek around Branford began, Fox 61 sent a camera and reporter Keith McGilvery to interview him inside his costume. (33:54)
