Throwback Concert: Black Sabbath at New Haven Coliseum 1983

99.1 PLR celebrates 50 years! This week we are celebrating another great year in our history: 1983!

That year PLR welcomed Black Sabbath to New Haven Coliseum. Black Sabbath, featuring new lead vocalist Ian Gillam, hit the road in 1983 to support their eleventh studio album “Born Again.” Despite the departure of vocalist Ronnie James Dio and drummer Vinny Appice in 1982, the album was a commercial success in the United Kingdom and America. It was Black Sabbath’s highest charting album in the U.K. in 10 years and it became an American Top 40 hit.

Bill Ward, who appeared on the “Born Again” album, didn’t appear on the tour due to person problems. His replacement was former Electric Light Orchestra drummer Bev Bevan.

Joining Black Sabbath at the Coliseum was special guest Quiet Riot.

With the passing of Wichy-Poo, Chaz and AJ were reminded of the acid trip that was “H.R. Pufnstuf.” Strangely, Ashley loved this show as a kid. After finding audio of the magical flute from “H.R. Pufnstuf,” the Tribe starting calling in the shows they watched as kids that were also very strange. Weinerville?? (0:00)

President Biden called in to talk about wearing masks, and the viral picture of him with Jimmy and Rosalyn Carter. Then, former President Trump crashed the call to talk about the Bill Gates divorce. (17:11)

Dumb Ass News – A kid got himself stuck in an antique, wooden barrel. Predictably, AJ was not very sympathetic. (23:05)

The Tribe shared the dumb things they did as a kids, including getting inside the dryer, trying a “Tarzan” from the roof of the garage, and dropping a glass tank on their own face. (29:28)

Joe Meyers the movie critic was on the phone as Chaz and AJ discussed the best “no brainer” movies, which are big budget movies that require no brain power to enjoy. “True Lies” might be the best one ever, judging by this conversation. (41:11)

Attorney John Haymond called in to promote the start of bike season, and shared a crazy story from his childhood about a fight at the dinner table. (46:43)

Throwback Thursday: Grateful Dead at New Haven Coliseum 1983

99.1 PLR celebrates 50 years! This week we are celebrating another great year in our history: 1983!

That year PLR presented The Grateful Dead at New Haven Coliseum for two shows on back-to-back nights. The Dead were on their spring East Coast tour, and by playing back-to-back nights in New Haven, the city was buzzing with Deadheads from all around. In their history The Grateful Dead had played in New Haven 12 times total (11 times at the Coliseum), but this was their first time playing two consecutive nights in the city. They would do it again the following spring, playing consecutive nights in April 1984.

Brian Robson managed to mail himself across the Pacific, in a tiny box. Way back before there were laws to prevent this kind of thing. He was on with Chaz and AJ to talk about how he made the plan, why he never made it home, and how he used the bathroom during his five days inside the box. (12:17)

Ila from the Milford Oyster Fest called in to share good news about this summer, and hinted at the potential musical act. Then, the largest White Castle in the United States recently opened in Florida. (32:52)

99.1 PLR celebrates 50 years! This week we are celebrating another great year in our history: 1983!

That year PLR presented U2 at Yale’s Woolsey Hall. U2 hit the road in ’83 to support its third studio album “War,” which featured such hit songs as New Year’s Day, Two Hearts Beat as One, Sunday Bloody Sunday and 40. This was U2’s fourth time playing in New Haven and their first one away from Toad’s Place. Just six weeks later, U2 would bring the “War” Tour back to New Haven with their first ever show at New Haven Coliseum.
