50 Years, 50 Albums 1972: Rolling Stones ‘Exile on Main St.’

50 Years, 50 Albums 1972: Rolling Stones ‘Exile on Main St.’

The year was 1972 and the three albums we chose from that year was the debut album from the Eagles, David Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust and the Rolling Stones’ Exile on Main St. After the dust settled, it was the 12th Studio Album and the first double album from the Stones Exile on Main Street that gathered the most votes. Released in 1972 and recorded at a rented villa in the South of France as the Stones were living abroad as “tax exiles”. They set up there mobile recording equipment at the villa and preceded to record one of their best albums. Coming off the Sticky Fingers sessions they continued to record some of the Stones classics, especially Keith’s Happy, Tumbling Dice and a combination of blues, R&B and country songs. Although it was released with mixed reviews in 1972, by 2003 it was No. 7 on Rolling Stone Magazine’s 500 Greatest Albums of All Time and inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2012, the band’s fourth album to be inducted. At this time we are honored to include the Rolling Stones Exile on Main St. into the WPLR Hall of Fame. Thanks for your votes.
